- »One on One with Ed Hess
Grow or Die. It’s probably the most common business axiom, and the least accurate, according to the new book “Smart Growth: Building an Enduring Business by Managing the Risks of Growth” (Columbia Business School Publishing). To better understand the book’s implications for firms, Consulting’s One-on-One sat down with the book’s author, Ed Hess, a former Arthur Andersen strategy consultant and current professor at the University of Virginia's Darden Graduate School of Business.

»2009 Best Small Firms to Work For: Stroud Consulting (No. 2)

Stroud Consulting is an operations management firm with offices in Massachusetts, England, and Australia. The firm sums up its vision in a simple sentence: “We are passionate about driving results.” Stroud has recruited heavily even during the recession, and is looking to hire even more. “Hopefully being a Best Small Firm again this year will catch the attention of some strong consultants who would like to help us continue to build our business,” says Nathaniel Greene, managing partner and CEO of Stroud Consulting.
One of the firm’s highest scores was in the area of the Job—that is the actual client work the consultants are doing—an area Greene calls “the most important aspect of your career,” adding, “we spend most of our adult lives working—so enjoying it is essential. Life is too short to waste doing something that does not make you immensely happy and satisfied.”
This enlightened attitude by management didn’t hurt the firm’s Leadership score either, another area where Stroud scored highly. Greene calls the leadership at Stroud “transparent and inclusive,” and that his firm’s approach to leadership “leads to strong confidence and faith in decisions.” If you hope to ascend the ranks at Stroud, you had better be prepared to work for it. “The leadership team is there on merit alone,” says Greene. The firm ranked No. 2 overall among small firms in the categories of The Job, Leadership, Career Development and Work/Life Balance, and was No. 1 in Compensation and Benefits. We didn’t need to tell Stroud that they were one of the Best Small Firms to Work For. To hear Nathaniel Greene’s perspective, the survey results simply confirmed what they believe internally—“that we have created an atmosphere that allows people to thrive at work and at home.”
